While this title indicates a focus on the home front, it is more accurately a study of the women, children, Indigenous peoples, and enslaved people affected by the conflict. Each of these demographic groups receives its own chapter, which highlights roles they played on and off the battlefield, as well as the impacts of war on their lives. Readers will be surprised and fascinated by stories of women accompanying battalions, kids working as army messengers, and the bravery regularly shown by Black and Native Americans, including Polly Cooper, the Oneida woman who fed starving soldiers, and Salem Poor, born enslaved, who bought his freedom before the war and fought for the Continental Army. Many reproductions of artwork depicting battle scenes, political cartoons, and other archival images appear, as do useful modern graphics, such as a handy time line of the war and, notably, a map of Indigenous tribes east of the Mississippi and their wartime alliances.
