Description: Arthur Goes to Korea
The Early Life of Arthur Garner Welbon and His First Years as a Missionary to Korea, 1900-1902
In 1900, Arthur Garner Welbon left the United States to answer a calling to missionary service in Korea. Born in 1866 into a family of laborers and farmers, Arthur's path to the mission field reflected a deep commitment to his faith and a desire to serve others in a distant land.
During his early years as a missionary in Korea, Arthur met Sarah Harvey Nourse, known as Sadie, who had arrived as a missionary in 1899. They married in Korea in 1901 and served together for many years. In 1919, Sadie's illness brought them back to the United States. Although Arthur returned to the mission field in Korea in 1921, Sadie was unable to join him and remained in the United States until her death in 1925. Arthur continued his missionary service until his death from typhoid fever in 1928. He was buried at Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery in Seoul beside their two children.
Covering the years 1900-1902, Arthur Goes to Korea follows Arthur's journey from his early life in the United States through his first years of missionary service in Korea. Through photographs, letters, documents, and preserved family records, this volume offers a personal glimpse into Arthur's early experiences, his developing ministry, and the world in which he began his lifelong service in Korea.
Organized and compiled by Arthur and Sadie's granddaughter, Priscilla Welbon Ewy, this book is the second volume in the Welbon Korea Mission Document Series. Together, the series preserves the Welbon family's missionary story and documents their lives, ministry, and experiences in Korea across several decades.
