Description:
Helping children break down the binary and gender stereotypes. This is an educational book about understanding gender vs. the body you were born with and finding your identity. I hope this story will help children better understand themselves, their classmates, as well as Queer and Transgender people, as we all continue to grow together in this world. Simplified for children big and small, told through the eyes of an Una.
Brief description: I'm Salem Smallman, the author of UNA. I come from a theatre and improv background. I have always loved to draw and make up stories. I have been a babysitter since the age of 12 and anytime I would put the kids to sleep I'd make up a new bedtime story and act it out for them. The stories were simple and silly, but they loved them. That helped make me into the creative thinker I am today. I am now a very proud Una to many nieces, nephews, and baby cousins. I wanted to make this book for them. Not only so they can understand who I am and my identity, but also so they can grow up feeling free to be who they are and knowing that they've got someone like me to help them on that journey. The world is still a very binary place, filled with gender expectations, but I hope to help make it easier for this next generation to navigate.
