The Julio-Claudians and the Herods examines two major dynasties of the early Roman Empire. Rather than treating the Herods only as client kings, it considers each house on its own terms-its political strategies, ideological claims, public imagery, and methods of legitimising rule.
It then explores where their interests met, where their narratives overlapped, and how their uses of power and propaganda intersected within the wider Roman East. Drawing on literary sources, archaeology, and numismatics, it situates both dynasties within the broader imperial system without reducing one to the other.
This volume includes the full texts of two previously published essays-Gaius Caligula's Reign, Personality and Friendship with M. Julius Agrippa and The Malhata Fortress on the Roman-Judaean Negev Frontier-presented here as integrated chapters. Readers do not need to purchase my shorter Julius Caesar volume at this stage, as its current material is already included here. The two books will diverge over time as each expands.

Elizabeth Legge is a Classical Archaeologist and Doctor of Medicine candidate at a European university. She achieved her Master's degree in Classical Archaeology at the University of Pisa, Italy and will be pursuing a PhD in the field. She was awarded her Bachelor of Arts in Classical Studies and Bachelor of Sciences in Integrated Sciences at the University of British Columbia, Canada. She has travelled extensively to all continents since childhood and lived in many countries. She is Australian, Canadian and half English.
