This is the second volume of a two-volume political history of China. It covers the period from the fall of the Qing dynasty to the shared leadership of Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao (the years 1905-2013). The author's intention is to give western readers a better understanding of Chinese political history, and of the Chinese historical point of view generally, with the aim of promoting more peaceful relations between the West and China. The nine chapters cover:
- Progress towards a united republic (1905 - 1928)
- The decade of Nationalist rule in Nanjing (1927/8 - 1937/8)
- World War II in China (1937 - 1945)
- The Chinese Civil War, and the first phase of Communist rule (1945 - 1953)
- Early economic development of the PRC, and the Great Leap Forward (1953 - 1962)
- The Cultural Revolution (1966 - 1976)
- From Deng Xiaoping's Reform and Opening Up to Tiananmen Square (1977 - 1989)
- The Jiang Zemin era (1993 - 2003)
- Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao
