Description:

In the beginning, a serpent is heard before it is seen - and so the trouble starts.

Samael, Satan, and Iblis is not a book so much as a descent. Before evil had a name, it had a shadow, and that shadow is traced here through three religions that were never quite willing to let it go. What begins as an accusing voice in the court of God is, chapter by chapter, remade - split, renamed, exiled, worshipped, feared - until three separate devils are standing where once there was only one uncertain figure.

Genesis is unearthed first, and its serpent is shown to be far stranger than the one Sunday school remembers. In the Book of Job, a courtroom prosecutor is glimpsed doing God's own dirty work. On the Day of Atonement, a goat is driven into the wilderness carrying a name - Azazel - that no one has ever fully explained. Heaven is broken into by the Watchers, and forbidden knowledge is handed down to a humanity that was never meant to have it. Poison is folded into an angel's very name when Samael arrives, and before Eve, a first wife is quietly written out of the story - only to return as Lilith, mother of every demon who haunts a cradle.

Then Rome enters the account, and the Devil is given a face he never loses. A man possessed among the tombs is asked his name, and the answer given back is Legion. A morning star falls from Isaiah's poetry and lands, centuries later, as Lucifer. Hell, once formless, is handed a government - kings, princes, dukes, and a bureaucracy of sin - and every possible weakness in a human heart is assigned its own personal demon.

Only then does Islam enter, and the whole architecture is undone. Iblis is not fallen - he is refused, for reasons no other tradition dares to give a devil. Made from smokeless fire, the jinn are shown to live alongside us in a world both older and stranger than ours. A whisperer takes up residence in every human breast, a shape-shifting ghoul is left waiting on desert roads, and a question is finally asked that none of the three faiths can fully answer: are Samael, Satan, and Iblis merely different masks worn by the same ancient face?

Four parts. Forty-eight chapters. From the Garden of Eden to the deserts of Arabia, an entire civilization's nightmare is laid bare here - not retold, but excavated.

Some doors, once opened, are not easily closed again.
