After their arrival in Brazil, following a traumatic crossing of the Atlantic, enslaved peoples from West Africa sought to reconstruct their sacred cultural and belief systems within a hostile environment. The terreiros (ritual grounds) they established are still active sites of worship centuries later, bearing witness to an ever-adaptive religion celebrated both in Brazil and internationally within Afro-diasporic communities. Published as both a book and a double LP, Candomblé Sacred Rhythms in Brazil honors these beliefs, and the musical tradition that accompanies them, by documenting the past while critically and artistically reflecting on its contemporary evolution and future possibilities.
