Description: On the furthest edge of the young United States, law, loyalty, and daily life were written into fragile pages. These voices still speak today. Kaskaskia Records, 1778-1790 gathers a remarkable historical records collection from Illinois's earliest American era, edited by distinguished historian Clarence Walworth Alvord for the Illinois State Historical Library. Here the transformation of a French American settlers' village into an outpost of Virginia authority unfolds in original primary source documents: orders and petitions, oaths of allegiance, land dealings, and the routine business of government and justice on the American Revolution frontier. Every entry reveals how people negotiated power, property, faith, and survival in 18th century Illinois, making this volume an essential window onto illinois frontier history and the wider colonial midwest. For researchers and genealogists, these meticulously preserved early American legal records and official papers provide rare names, places, and relationships; for general readers, they offer vivid, unvarnished glimpses of frontier lives. As an academic history reference it anchors serious work in colonial midwest studies and colonial american history documents, yet it also rewards the curious browser who wants to feel the texture of everyday experience in 18th century illinois. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
