Description: From the gallows of Tyburn to the pulpits of Farm Street, English Jesuits, whether lauded or lamented, have featured prominently in England's religious, theological, and cultural landscapes since the arrival of Edmund Campion, Robert Persons, and Ralph Emerson in 1580. Within 45 years, the small mission became a large province of more than 200 members despite the persistent depiction of Jesuits as treasonous firebrands plotting against the crown and responsible for the Great Fire of London, as witnessed in the annual celebration of Bonfire Night and the Monument. This collection examines various aspects of its mission, the contributions of some prominent members, and the imaginary Jesuit of myth and folklore.
