Description: In Jewish Education from Antiquity to the Middle Ages there are fifteen tightly themed specialist studies that discuss individual texts, wider literary corpora, and various related themes to set a new agenda for the study of Jewish education.

Brief description: George J. Brooke, Ph.D. (1978), Claremont Graduate School, D.D. (2010), Oxford University, is Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis Emeritus at the University of Manchester. He is the Editor of Brill's series Studies on the Desert of Judah.

Renate Smithuis, Ph.D. (2004), University of Manchester, is Lecturer in Medieval Jewish Studies at Manchester University. An expert on Abraham ibn Ezra, she also co-edited with Philip Alexander From Cairo to Manchester: Studies on the Rylands Genizah Fragments (Oxford, 2013).

Review Quotes: '... a rich volume [...] combines thought-provoking discussions of Jewish educational views and practices with a detailed attention to educational texts an how these express their didactic purposes. The volume stimulates new ways of thinking about Jewish education and, by so doing, constitutes a fitting tribute to the educator it honors.'
Pieter B. Hartog, Protestant Theological University, Groningen, The Netherlands, Journal for the Study of Judaism 49 (2018)

The chapters provide focused examinations of Jewish education from the Hellenistic era to the late Middle Ages and make advances in their respective fields (Scrolls, gospels, Talmud, etc). Indeed, all who are interested in Jewish education will want to consult the articles within this volume. Overall, this collection was a joy to read, full of erudition and critical thinking and a fitting tribute to Philip Alexander on the celebration of his seventieth birthday.
Sean A. Adams, Journal for the Study of the New Testament, 2017

Beate Ego, Theologische Literaturzeitung, 2020
