In December 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven men set sail on the Endurance toward the South Pole, with the goal of crossing Antarctica, the last unexplored continent, by land. A month later, the ship became trapped in the ice of the Weddell Sea, unable to reach land, near the Antarctic Circle. Alfred Lansing served in the United States Navy in his youth and was awarded the Purple Heart. After World War II, he returned in 1946 to Northwestern University to study Journalism. He was editor of a weekly newspaper in Illinois and later worked as a freelance writer for United Press and Collier's magazine. He also served as an editor at Time Inc. In 1959 he published Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage. The book became a New York Times bestseller in its 1980s edition, selling over one million copies and translated into Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Norwegian, Finnish, Hebrew, and more. Unfortunately, the author did not live to enjoy the success of his work, as he passed away in 1975.
