Description: Art Makes Its Mark. New Acquisitions from the Old Europe The Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig is one of the oldest museums in Europe, and its European-oriented collection tradition still governs its policy of new acquisitions. This volume presents 275 of the 4.406 works acquired in the last 30 years. Under the directorship of Prof. Dr. Jochen Luckhardt, they have become part of the collections since 1990. The representatively selected paintings, sculptures, objects of applied art, as well as works of art on paper are arranged here so as to highlight the function of European art and its relationship to European values. Are there fundamental, atemporal ideas and patterns common to the emergence of these works? The volume also shows the very different ways of acquisition: from buying at auctions, from art dealers or private persons to permanent loans and donations from foundations, artists, and collectors.
