Description: English summary: Pain in Medieval and Early Modern Literature is a documentation of the results of the eponymous conference held in Freiburgon 17th-19th May 2007 with participants from Northern America and Europe. Setting out from a recent interest among cultural studies scholars in pain as a coded representation, the contributors examine the phenomenon of pain in literary texts from the 12th to 17th century. The contributions focus especially on the memory of paid (pain as a mnemonic element, dream narratives), the complexity of the portrayal of pain in texts and illustrations (topos of unutterability, writing in pain, emblematic visualisation) and detailed studies of the connection between pain and piety (the tradition of the Treatise of Bernard, Elsbeth von Oye's Offenbarungen) and the literary instrumentalisation of pain in heroic epics and in Middle High German courtly romances. German description: Ausgehend vom neuen kulturwissenschaftlichen Interesse am Schmerz und seiner Codiertheit untersuchen die Beitrage dieses Bandes das Phanomen Schmerz in seiner spezifisch literarischen Verfasstheit in Texten des 12. bis 17. Jahrhunderts. Dabei liegen Schwerpunkte besonders auf der Frage nach der Erinnerung an Schmerz (Schmerz als Element der Mnemotechnik, Traumanarrative), der Komplexitat der Schmerzdarstellung in Wort und Bild (Unsagbarkeitstopos, Schreiben im Schmerz, emblematische Visualisierung) sowie auf Detailstudien zum Konnex von Schmerz und Frommigkeit (Tradition des Bernhardstraktats, Elsbeths von Oye Offenbarungen) und zur literarischen Instrumentalisierung des Schmerzes in der Heldenepik und im mittelhochdeutschen hofischen Roman. Der Band dokumentiert die Ergebnisse der gleichnamigen Tagung, die vom 17. bis 19. Mai 2007 in Freiburg als Arbeitsgesprach nordamerikanischer und europaischer Wissenschaftler stattgefunden hat.
