Descriptions, Reviews, etc.

Description: In his Republic Plato considers grasping the unity of mathematics as the ultimate goal of the mathematical studies in which the future philosopher-rulers must engage before they turn to philosophy. How the unity of mathematics is supposed to be understood is not explained, however.

Brief description: Theokritos Kouremenos is Associate Professor of Greek Studies at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. His research interests are in ancient philosophy and science. He has published mainly on Aristotle and coauthored the 2006 edition of the Derveni Papyrus.

Review Quotes: "This is not only an in-depth and eminently readable analysis of the relations between astronomy, harmonics, geometry, and arithmetic in Plato's dialogues, and in particular in his Republic, but also an astonishing comparison between an ancient and a contemporary tension that reveals a new aspect of the significance of Plato and Aristotle for contemporary philosophical debates."
