This handbook provides an overview of the sociolinguistic situation of Ibero-American countries, with an emphasis on Ibero-American Community of Nations member states. Phenomena such as bi- and multilingualism, border varieties, creolization or demolinguistic dynamics respond to different geographical, historical and political conditions and, as such, are specific to each region and country. To help understand better this sociolinguistic diversity, the present volume offers an interdisciplinary approach drawing on the sociology of language, ethnography and linguistic anthropology.
While it primarily addresses the most widely spoken languages in Ibero-America (Spanish, Portuguese, English, French...), it also takes a variety of Indigenous languages into consideration, as well as the super-diversity of some territories and minoritization processes. Likewise, it tackles the sociolinguistic impact of migratory movements - both towards cities and between countries (Central Americans, Venezuelans...).
