With an approach both chronological and thematic, this work has a threefold interest: it reintroduces the leftist movements of Central and Eastern Europe into European history; it brings together the historiographies of Communism and Socialism by integrating them into the history of non-Marxist Leftist movements, leading to a revaluation of the Left's relationship with liberalism but also the importance of the religious question in the demarcation of the political arena. And, finally, it provides a long-needed bibliographical resource. Conord's work is the first overview to present recent data from historical research on the subject, which evaluates differences in interpretation, notably the role and definition of Communism, either singular or plural.
