Description:
In June 1940, Welsh writer and journalist Cecily Mackworth joined two million people flooding out of Paris before the imminent arrival of the Nazis. I Came Out of France, first published in 1941 and famously admired by T. S. Eliot for its harrowing realism, chronicles her month-long escape through France; from surviving bombing raids to running improvised medical clinics where soldiers performed surgery on themselves - always in danger, always just one step ahead of the Germans.
Told in her characteristically clear, unsparing prose, it is a gripping eyewitness account of a nation in free-fall.
