Brief description: Scharmaine Lawson, DNP, FNP, PMHNP, FAANP, FAAN, has a nursing career that spans thirty years, with twenty-three of those years being an advanced practice nurse. Nola The Nurse(R) and her Super Friends Learn about Mardi Gras Safety tells the story of a trip to New Orleans by a group of children. All of the main characters want to work in health-related fields when they grow up. The trip is fun, of course, but trouble arises. Fortunately, Nola and her friends have certain superpowers. Using those superpowers, the friends work together to help the person in trouble. Each page of the book is a full-page illustration. Part of the book explains what Mardi Gras is. There is also a recipe for Mardi Gras King Cake. The entire book stresses keeping safe while having fun with friends. The author, Dr. Scharmaine Lawson, says the book is for children from kindergarten through third grade.
Nola The Nurse(R) and her Super Friends Learn about Mardi Gras Safety is a charming children's book. Readers can't help but like Nola and her want-to-be-health-care-worker friends. I especially enjoyed how the friends instantly jumped into action when one of them heard someone's cries for help. That's a superb lesson for children, teaching them that they shouldn't ignore it when they see someone in need. I was also impressed by Dr. Scharmaine Lawson's continued emphasis on having fun with friends while at the same time keeping safe and watching out for others in need. Although Lawson says the book is for children from kindergarten through third grade, younger children would enjoy having it read to them. I'm happy to recommend this book to anyone.
