Brief description: George Orwell (1903-1950), born Eric Arthur Blair in Motihari, British India, was one of the twentieth century's most influential writers and political thinkers. Educated at Eton College, he chose not to attend university, instead joining the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. His experiences there left him deeply critical of imperialism, prompting his resignation and inspiring works such as Burmese Days.Returning to England, Orwell lived among the poor in London and Paris, experiences he later chronicled in Down and Out in Paris and London (1933). Throughout his life, he sought to understand the realities of poverty, injustice, and political oppression through firsthand experience. He also fought in the Spanish Civil War with the Republican forces, where witnessing political infighting and totalitarian practices profoundly shaped his views on authoritarianism.Orwell's clear, direct prose and unwavering commitment to truth earned him a lasting reputation as both a novelist and essayist.
