Description:

Great fear and anxiety can stem from the trauma of an absent father. Absent-father syndrome can become a generational issue. It can also affect everything in our lives--perhaps most importantly, our intimate relationships. The key to breaking the cycle of hurt, misunderstanding, and loss is recognizing what belongs in the present--and what belongs in the past.

When we dare to embark on the healing journey, we open ourselves to making peace with our wounded past. This journey can deepen our present relationships and create real, lasting love with our partners. What wounded us in the past sometimes gives us the opportunity to grow in the future. Absent-Father Syndrome explores this trauma and the journey to healing.

Brief description: As an experienced neonatologist taking care of premature infants, Dr. Morarji Peesay (Dr. MP) noticed the impact fathers can have on the wellbeing of mothers and babies during deliveries. Fathers being absent in the delivery room has become a common incident, and the silence speaks volumes. During his career, Dr. Peesay has noticed too many cases where maternal and neonatal complications could have been minimized by just the presence of the baby's father, which is backed by the medical research. In his own life, Dr. Peesay faced the absence of his father and suffers from absent-father syndrome, which inspired him to do research and publish this book so that others can reflect on their lives and share it with others. Absent-father syndrome seems to affect the rich and poor, educated or illiterate, male or female, animals and humans alike. Dr. Peesay lives with his family in Maryland. He has published two medical books and iPhone apps on absent fathers and many other medical educational materials in iPhone app formats. He is actively involved in helping underprivileged kids cope with absent fathers.

Review Quotes: "I believe that the importance of the role of fathers in our society is greatly undervalued...to the detriment of all. I believe [this book] has the possibility and the power to break some negative generational cycles and to foster generational healing and restoration." -- Alison Lewis, social worker, Georgetown University
