He is a 30-year veteran of the newspaper industry, having worked in reporting and management positions at the Associated Press, San Antonio Express-News, Austin American-Statesman, South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. He started his career at the El Paso Herald-Post in his hometown. He is a past president of the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors as well as a past president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and a former national board member of the Society of Professional Journalists. He is a founding member of the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists. He was named in 2017 to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame.
