Description: A gem of American urban planning history that would become a benchmark in discussions about the shape of the new American city

Brief description: Vincent Scully (1920-2017) was Sterling Professor Emeritus at Yale University. He was widely regarded as North America's preeminent architectural historian. He is the author of numerous books, including ten seminal works in architectural and urban design history. Among his many awards are the National Medal of Arts and the Urban Land Institute's J. C. Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development. The National Endowment for the Humanities chose Scully to deliver its prestigious Jefferson Lecture, and the National Building Museum has established the Vincent Scully Prize in Scully's honor.
