Descriptions, Reviews, etc.

Description: Mapped to the 2018 NMC Standards, this book explores core nursing knowledge, skills and attributes through the lens of diversity, from assessment and care planning to effective communication and person-centred care.

Brief description: Beverley Brathwaite became a registered adult nurse in 1991, working clinically in acute general medicine, tissue viability and practice development. Gaining a degree and MSc, Beverley is also a registered teacher with the NMC and currently working on her PhD. Beverley's teaching focus has ranged from tissue viability, to acute and long-term nursing care, to evidence-based practice, to inequalities in health. She has worked with undergraduate degree students from all fields, as well as nursing associates.

Review Quotes: This is an excellent introductory text that challenges both student nurse and registrant to question their clinical practise and whether they deliver care that is truly culturally competent and congruent when considered alongside the rich diversity of our patients and service users. The chapters are focussed, well written and easy to engage with, offering excellent case study scenarios to aid the learner in linking theory to practise. Consulting and addressing the challenges facing marginalised communities (such as: Gypsy, Roma, and Travellers; and the LGBTQIA+ community), this text responds to what has on times been academically neglected areas and, in so doing, contributes a significant and much-needed opinion on nursing people from these underrepresented demographics. Each chapter is very clearly aligned to NMC standards, allowing the learner to consolidate their knowledge and understanding, and to make explicit links to the NMC Code. The suggested further reading and supporting information is relevant (but not overwhelming), allowing readers to academically challenge and push themselves as much as they feel appropriate. Its clarity, accuracy, and focus are to be commended, and would make a worthwhile addition to anyone's library.--Mr Matt James Townsend "drupal" (9/13/2023 12:00:00 AM)
