A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, he commanded his regiment during operations against Pakistan and later along the Line of Actual Control. Besides regimental service, he has held several important staff and instructional appointments. He has written seven books and has been awarded the Chair of Excellence twice by the United Service Institution of India.

Review Quotes:

"At the end of the book there is a commentary on the colour plates, with detailed descriptions of each of the three different uniforms found on all of the 8 pages. Written by an Indian Army veteran there is a lot in the text which I had not known before, though for me, as a modeller, then the uniform illustrations which are such a key part of the Men-at-Arms series will be a significant attraction." --Military Model Scene

"Readers interested in the development of the modern Indian army will find this book a useful primer" --Neil Smith

"Colonel Mandeep Singh has produced the most accurate, succinct, clear, readable and balanced account of the post-Independence Indian Army that I have seen." --Military History Society Bulletin
