Brief description: Kate has always loved books, her childhood overflowing with the adventures found within their pages. Now, as both a teacher and a parent, one of her greatest joys and privileges is sharing her love of literature with children. Born and raised in Canada, Kate began her teaching career with Regina Public Schools. Ready for new adventures, she moved to the UK in 2001. Kate has spent many rewarding years in Leeds schools guiding children through the world of learning. She has supported primary school teachers through her roles of Literacy Leader, Leading Literacy Teacher for Leeds, Advanced Skills Teacher and Senior Leadership with responsibility for Assessment. As a Primary English Consultant, Kate is now able to share her knowledge and enthusiasm even further. She enjoys reviewing children's literature for her blog, Scope for Imagination, working with authors and publishers to spread the word about their incredible books, and is passionate about helping teachers, parents and children find just the right ones for them. In her series, Developing Reading Comprehension Skills, Kate has created classroom resources that support both children and teachers in their quest to achieve key objectives and prepare for assessment while fostering a love of literature. Kate is adventuring through life with her ever supportive husband, three wonderful children and two very special cats.

Review Quotes:

Fantastic! This is a super resource for Y5/6. More often than not many comprehension resources have limited text types but this book has a really wide range of classic texts for pupils to access. It is really helpful for teachers as there is clear guidance with regards to content domain and an overview of text types. The questions are varied and match the types of questions that pupils might come across in KS2 SATS. As a headteacher, we are always on the hunt for good resources and my teachers love it! (Miss S, Head Teacher) --Brilliant Publications website

"This book of reading comprehension has clearly been written by an experienced and passionate upper KS2 English teacher. Each section is so well planned: taking children through challenging questions that develop learning in key areas such as inference, authorial use of language and vocabulary. This should scaffold teachers to bring brilliant teaching of reading into every classroom - great for NQTs, RQTs and experienced teachers alike. The introductory sections are useful too to explain how the book could be used and the thinking behind the different question types."

"I would recommend this book to parents who want to give a bit more stretch, those preparing for e.g. 11+ exams and (having spent 4 years home educating ourselves) home educators who want to start to explore reading comprehension in a more formal way. I am also very tempted to buy a few books from the series as something different for an end-of-year gift for teachers."
