Description: "The book of Jeremiah is full of beauty and brokenness, joy and sorrow. These themes are interwoven throughout the book, often without context or introduction, which can leave the present reader without the full picture of what the passage conveys. In Understanding Jeremiah: Its Setting, Composition, and Message, author Duane A. Garrett steps back from verse-by-verse commentary to provide a bird's-eye view of the book, giving rich background information to these prophetic writings. This three-thousand-foot view of Jeremiah gives specific insight into the politics, governance, and key players in Judah, Israel, and the surrounding nations; Jeremiah's life and its witness to holy living; the structure and composition of the book of Jeremiah; and the broader message of Jeremiah. Garrett's thorough discussion of the book of Jeremiah is informative to both student and scholar alike, giving all readers a more thorough understanding and appreciation of Jeremiah, the book and the prophet"--

Brief description: (PhD, Baylor University) is Professor of Old Testament at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. His recent publications include The Problem of the Old Testament and Jeremiah and Lamentations: A Commentary for Biblical Preaching and Teaching. He has taught in Korea, Canada, and the United States, and was at Gordon-Conwell prior to his present position. He has taught advanced courses on the Prophets throughout his career and has long had a special interest in Jeremiah.

Review Quotes: Duane Garrett and Calvin Pearson wisely focused on the text and its meaning in their commentary, Jeremiah and Lamentations: A Commentary for Biblical Preaching and Teaching (Kregel: 2022). In the present volume Garrett deals in greater depth with significant and sometimes-thorny issues in the Book of Jeremiah such as its historical context, structure, chronology, text, theology, and use in the Church today. As we have come to expect from Garrett's previous work, the volume is insightful, creative (in the best way), clearly written and accessible. I was challenged academically and edified in my faith. This outstanding volume will be an invaluable resource for those preaching and teaching the Book of Jeremiah.--Eric J. Tully "Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School" (9/13/2024 12:00:00 AM)
