Set in Oklahoma during the Great Depression the book is on the one hand a mystical foray into Tuffy's idyllic, natural world and on the other a realistic look at poor white sharecroppers, American Indians and a host of interesting and colorful characters who inhabit in the boy's world. The book contains elements of fantasy and allegory, romance and drama, song and verse and tongue-in-cheek humor. It does not, however, contain any graphic sex scenes, no overt human violence
