He is currently directing a major project on a Pompeian neighbourhood with Michael Fulford and, since 2001, has directed the Herculaneum Conservation Project. He frequently contributes to radio and television programmes on various aspects of Roman life and in 2004 was awarded an OBE for services to Anglo-Italian cultural relations.

Review Quotes: "Among the many studies of ancient Roman history and society, this one will stand out for its scope and depth as well as its clarity and bold interpretation. [Wallace-Hadrill] (his insightful discussion of Vitruvius is superb). Students and scholars alike will find this book the standard for research and interpretation. Highly recommended. --Choice
