Description:
Sediments Close-up: The Micromorphology and Microsedimentology of Non-lithified Sediments presents microsedimentology preparation methods, sampling strategies, interpretation, and quantitative methodology, all of which are broken into distinct sections for each stage of the process. The book forms a thorough reference and practical guide to the field from an editorial team with decades of experience and comprehensively details diagnostic techniques to determine depositional environments. The micromorphology and microsedimentology practices covered have become invaluable tools in the study of sediments and, in particular, microstructures within these sediments.
Finally, the book includes detailed case studies to help readers understand and implement the techniques covered. Users will find this to be an in-depth technical reference on microsedimentology for geoscientists, academic supervisors, geoscience conservation officers, geo-engineers, environmental consultants and others in the field of sedimentology.
Brief description: Jaap JM van der Meer obtained a BSc, MSc and PhD at the University of Amsterdam, where he stayed until moving to London in 2000. He was Professor of Physical Geography until he retired in 2011. Prof van der Meer specializes in glacial processes and resulting landforms and sediments (transfer and temporary storage). Specifically focusing on glacial sediments, especially in thin sections and dynamic structures like push moraines. Prof van der Meer has published widely on these topics, including two co-edited volumes since retirement. His research is embedded in international work, encompassing collaboration with colleagues from most continents and fieldwork ranging from the Arctic to the Antarctic. He has co-hosted MSc training courses in London, nine international workshops for the micromorphology of glacial sediments for PhD students and Postdocs and also set up the Centre for Micromorphology at the University of London.
